Featured country was chosen by Houstonian festival-goers
Houston, TX, November 15, 2013– On Thursday, November 14, over 100 Houston tastemakers, elected officials, friends, sponsors and key supporters of the Houston Festival Foundation attended the private launch event for the 2014 Houston International Festival. Sponsored by Jaguar Houston Central, the Launch Party was held at Booker-Lowe Gallery and served as a celebration for three launches: The Festival launch, the launch of the latest art exhibit at Booker-Lowe Gallery and the launch of the Jaguar F-type. Guests included: City Councilmember Ellen Cohen; Minnette Boesel on behalf of Mayor Annise Parker; Australia Honorary Consul General Nana Booker; Karen Rawls, Government and Public Affairs Field Representative for Chevron; Jason Lacher of Jaguar Houston, Houston Ballet Artistic Director Stanton Welch and more.
At the Launch Party, Welch was announced as the 2014 Houston International Festival Honorary Chair. Houston Festival Foundation Chairman Harry Gee said, “As Houston’s most celebrated and renowned Australian expatriate, Welch personifies the cultural bridge we are creating in 2014 between Australia and the US.”
During May and June this year, a survey was extended to past Houston International Festival patrons, who chose Australia as their favored featured country for 2014. The culture, entertainment, history, cuisine, and art of Australia will be showcased in downtown Houston April 26-27 and May 3-4, 2014, and Australia will be featured in the Houston International Festival’s Teacher’s Curriculum Guide, which will be distributed to 1,470 schools in in the Houston area as part of the Houston Festival Foundation education and outreach program.
Kim Stoilis, President of the Houston International Festival, said, “2014 is the anniversary of Houston’s Sister City relationship with Perth and we look forward to highlighting this relationship as well as the arts, culture and history of Australia overall.”

2014 marks the 44th year for the Festival, which is produced by a 501(c) (3) non-profit organization, the Houston Festival Foundation, Inc. Festival proceeds benefit the education program of the foundation, which produces a teacher’s curriculum guide on the spotlighted country’s culture. The curriculum guide reaches a potential 900,000 students at 1,471 campuses in seven Texas counties. Foundation funding is provided in part by grants from the City of Houston through the Houston Arts Alliance, corporate sponsorships, private contributions, in-kind support and volunteer assistance.
